In this session, Michael Schmela, Executive Advisor and Head of Market Intelligence of SolarPower Europe, will present the results of the groundbreaking study from SolarPower Europe and LUT University on a 100% renewable transition pathway to achieve climate-neutrality before 2050. The presentation will cover how the European Union can lead the fight against climate change and harvest the benefits of a 100% renewable energy system-, with solar at its core, delivering a prosperous, secure, and climate-neutral European economy.
Michael Schmela is the Executive Advisor, head of market intelligence and a member of the leadership team of SolarPower Europe, the European association of the solar power sector. Mr. Schmela has been working in the solar industry for over 20 years. After co-founding Photon-Magazine in 1996, he served in various positions in the Photon group, primarily as Editor-in-Chief of Photon International. In 2014, Schmela started MISCHCO, a company offering strategy consulting and communication services to solar companies. In 2016, TaiyangNews, a digital news platform for the solar industry that Schmela founded, went online.

Graduated in Electric Engineering at University of Pavia in 1995 with a degree thesis about PV for the developing countries, Mr. Viscontini worked in the PV modules production in Eurosolare (ENI) and in distribution and system integration with DEA. In 2001 he managed the connection of the first residential Italian PV system and founded Enerpoint, for many years one of the leading global PV companies. He is currently managing Enerpointpv assets. In 2015 he founded ITALIA SOLARE, and is its President. ITALIA SOLARE is the only Italian association that is 100% dedicated to PV, with approximately 800 members. He also serves as a strategic consultant for top-tier global companies in the PV sector.

Professor Dr. Quaschning has been a professor for the field of regenerative energy systems at the University of Applied Sciences HTW Berlin for 16 years. He is regarded as one of the pioneers in the field of renewable energies. As early as 1993, he wrote his doctoral thesis on shading of photovoltaic systems. From 1996 to 2000, he wrote his Habitilation on Structures of a Climate Compatible Energy Supply. Today, more than 45,200 subscribers follow Quaschning's YouTube channel, in which he provides up-to-date and well-founded information about the energy turnaround, climate protection and a sustainable energy supply. Quaschning has reached a very broad audience with his positions through several hundred magazine articles, conference contributions, lectures, interviews and appearances on radio and TV. Quaschning is also committed to a sustainable future in his role as co-initiator of the non-institutional, non-partisan and interdisciplinary association of scientists "Scientists for future".

Sam founded the last-mile logistics company Gnewt in 2009 using an electric only fleet. During his tenure, he created the UK’s largest fully EV commercial fleet, the largest privately-owned smart charging infrastructure system and the UK’s largest fully operational and utilised private V2G network. Gnewt was acquired by Menzies Distribution in 2017. Sam was a 2015 winner at the Great British Entrepreneurs Awards and a Fellow and Chair for the National Institute of Couriers. Sam works with key clients, the wider industry and Governmental bodies. In 2020, he was voted #36 in the greenfleet.net top 100 most influential people in Low Carbon Fleets. Most recently, Sam has extended his Advisory capacity with GRIDSERVE to become their Chief Vehicle Electrification Officer to help accelerate their zero-emission future particularly through the build of a nationwide network of Electric Forecourts.
Quantifying the Gain of Mismatch Mitigation: What a New Study Approach Reveals
Traditionally, the industry benchmark for energy loss due to module mismatch is 2%. From our experience monitoring more than 1.5 million sites around the world, we felt that module mismatch was much greater. So we conducted an in-depth two-stage study to assess the level of actual module power discrepancy inside strings in real-world scenarios, and deduce the energy variance between modules of identical nameplates. We then compared SolarEdge DC optimized systems to typical string inverters to calculate the energy loss due to mismatch. In this presentation we will share our exciting findings which challenge the current baseline.
With over 10 years of experience simulating commercial PV projects, Shy has been helping SolarEdge customers achieve a better understanding of the expected energy production and revenue from their projects. Specializing in various simulation tools, Shy has become an expert in the accurate prediction of not only future energy production of a given site, but also the expected advantage of the SolarEdge system compared to a traditional inverter.
Before joining SolarEdge in 2011, Shy worked several years as an architect in New York and Tel Aviv, specializing in 3D design of commercial projects.
